Plot: A gay college professor in 1960s Los Angeles struggles come to terms with the death of his lover. The film follows him on the day he intends to commit suicide. Let me be clear, A Single Man is not a movie for choc top eating or popcorn munching. Any noise emanating from the audience is a distraction. Not only because this film is very quiet (literally), but this film requires focus in order to fully appreciate the beauty and the detail. Director (and former fashion designer) Tom Ford has been criticised for overdesigning the film, but the highly stylised visuals works in its favour. Going into the film I did expect it to look good (what else can you expect from the man who single-handedly revived Gucci?), but what I did expect was for Ford to be a decent storyteller. Every frame has been carefully constructed to let you a little bit more into George’s world: to show what it’s like for a man struggling to get through the day as normally as possible. I felt as though I was watching film as art as opposed to film just telling a story. The film tends to lose a little bit of pace in the final act. The minimal dialogue wears a little thin and the film has a little bit of a struggle to keep itself moving all the way to the end. Thankfully we have Colin Firth in the leading role to distract us from the pacing problems. He gives a wonderfully un-Colin-Firth-like performance as George, the man at the centre of the story. Without Firth’s skill, without his ability to withhold and yet display so much, George would disappear, swallowed by the heightened visuals. But Firth holds his ground. You only need to watch Firth's face as he is told of his lover's death. The camera presses slowly in. You see his disbelief, his struggle to maintain control, his anger that he cannot attend the funeral. It’s truly a marvellous scene, for which Firth deserved the actual Oscar, not just the nomination. As for the supporting cast: Matthew Goode plays George’s lover Jim, seen through flashbacks, gives a performance that I actually for once, like. But I felt his character lacked definition. But then I suppose its George’s idea of Jim that’s important. George cannot live without him, whatever type of man he might be. Julianne Moore’s role as George’s perpetually drunk friend Charley, is a little more than an extended cameo. Nicholas Hoult is good, as college student Kenny, who takes an interest in George, but not quite up to par with Firth. I see a lot of potential in him, but maybe I was distracted by the amount of make up or fake tan that he was wearing. I’m pretty sure he had more make up on his face that the rest of the cast combined (females included). However, I did find the relationship between George and Kenny (Nicholas Hoult) to be a little disconcerting: mainly because of the whole teacher/ student thing. I also am uncomfortable with George replacing Jim with Kenny. People tell me that George want replacing Jim, he just found something to live for…. But I disagree. So much is made of the age difference between George and Jim and George and Kenny that the film seems to be drawing an intentional parallel between Jim and Kenny. Is there really that much difference between one you can’t live without and the one that you can live for? This is not for the 'I just want to be entertained' viewer. But, if you have the patience, then you will be rewarded.

A Single Man- Tom Ford's Personal and Beautiful Debut. Honestly, I think A Single Man was a film that was made with a philosophy behind it, that is exactly my kind of philosophy. A small contained character piece exploring ideas of grief and depression, demonstrated through a stylised and subtle way in a low-key small environment, timescale and approach. I don’t know if I necessarily enjoyed A Single Man, it’s a slow and upsetting study into the protagonist’s psyche after an accident where he lost his long-time partner. I definitely have a lot of appreciation for the film, it's clearly an off-beat debut film but it has a lot of craft and care put in it that pays off to an extremely upsetting and tough to watch film. I wouldn’t watch it again, it’s such a deeply sad film that says what it wants to say in an eloquent way and leaves the spectator to digest the film. Tom Ford has put a lot of effort into the style of his film, from the very opening shot we establish the tone and the style immediately as a beautiful score plays over surreal imagery of a body underwater. There is this almost obsessive attention to detail that runs through the film, you can feel Ford’s active direction of the film as it happens. Now, this is a bit of a double-edged sword as it does occasionally result in a loss of impact due to the film feeling very manipulated and by no means a realist approach to filmmaking. It’s a confliction I have with the film, it’s a beautiful film that feels like there’s someone pulling the strings behind it, you lose immersion because you never qu9ite believe the world. It works for its intended approach, it’s a fantastic study and a beautiful film but there are several moments I wish were simplified to let the emotion set in properly. For example, a fantastic symbolic post-production technique is the fantastic use of colour grading, the film has this grey and dark colour scheme that whenever George has a moment of happiness the shot becomes brighter and fills with colour. It’s not subtle but it is an essentially genius idea to demonstrate the value behind the moments. The narrative is very simple, it takes place over a small amount of time as George goes through several events after his boyfriend’s death. The plot has this underlying sadness in each scene, George has this intent to commit suicide that informs Firth’s performance through each and every scene, but Ford has clearly put effort into writing a character that doesn’t spend the film moping around, he explores the complexity of grief and depression. From meetings with an old friend with complicated histories to the pressures of responsibility. Firth is nothing short from incredible as the troubled protagonist, he manages to put across this complexity whilst making the audience feel so sympathetic towards him. He’s vulnerable as Firth plays with this idea of his formal exterior and the person beneath the upper-classman, which is a crazy difficult performance that is so perfectly done. The guest cast is really solid, with a surprisingly developed performance by Julianne Moore, she performs this façade of happiness to herself and Firth which makes her a brief but compelling character. Mathew Goode has a small performance in flashbacks as Firth’s boyfriend, the chemistry is strong between the two and there is a sense of understanding of George’s feelings through how well they work together in the flashbacks. The only character I don’t love is Nicholas Hoult, I just didn’t understand his character and he felt weird and misguided. This is a beautiful film, a gorgeously crafted and ambitious film. I can’t comprehend the amount of effort that went into creating the art behind the film. Ford is clearly a perfectionist, his work can feel so inaccessible as it is exploring personal problems rather than focusing on a social or political point. Ford set off to make a film that explored the impact of grief, and he did with such care and passion that the film becomes almost forgettable. It does its job through and through, it has an incredible emotional impact, but other than that he beauty only stretches that far. Its self-contained and gorgeous but I wasn’t thinking about it much after my first viewing, that’s not too say I would definitely recommend it, it’s an incredible beauty to behold that I think everyone could see and appreciate.

HOW TO BE SINGLE – Film Review. Reviewing How to Be Single presents me with a challenge. I could focus entirely on the quality of the movie as a movie. Is it well acted? Well directed? Does it have a good script? Does anything about the cinematography stand out? Editing? Set design? Or, to keep it simple: it’s a comedy, so is it funny? But we here at Zeke try to do more than evaluate the technical aspects of movies, as important as those are. We try to hear what films are saying, and think about the messages they’re sending. In the case of this movie I’m far more interested in the ideas than the technique. So let’s start, briefly, with whether How to Be Single is a well made movie. How to Be Single (based on the novel by Liz Truccillo) is less funny than I hoped, and aside from a handful of lines the script is flat. The best bits are pop culture references which work now but will not age well. The film is pretty to look at (it’s a flattering picture of New York City), but its editing is a near-fatal flaw. The timeline is confusing, and there are abrupt, unexplained jumps in the narrative. Director Christian Ditter seems at a loss to know what to include and what to leave out of the movie. As for the performers, they probably did the best they could with the material, but this will be a career low point for many of them. It may be, in fact, that the best performance of the movie was delivered by a baby who has an extended scene with Leslie Mann. That pre-verbal baby can really emote. Now let’s talk about what How to Be Single was saying… and that’s where reviewing this movie gets tricky. It is, allegedly, a female empowerment film – promoting both sisterhood and self-sufficiency. The soundtrack uses the song “Love Myself” by Hailee Steinfeld to drive the point home (although anyone who pays attention to those song lyrics will recognize that they’re describing a very limited, specific kind of self-love). So what’s wrong with all of that rah-rah, don’t need a man to be happy, sisters are doin’ it for themselves messaging? Just this: How to Be Single defines female empowerment as, first of all, the freedom to have lots and lots of sex with lots and lots of dudes – no harm, no foul, no feelings. I learned after reviewing 2015’s Trainwreck that questioning whether or not hookup culture is entirely healthy makes me subject to charges of being puritanical, repressed, not sex-positive. But here I go again: I do not actually think that having sex with more people necessarily equals a more positive sexuality. I don’t think a woman’s joy and freedom can be measured by the number of sexual partners that she’s had. I do not believe embracing a pattern of drunken sexual encounters with strangers or near-strangers is progress for women. And yes, admittedly, I say that as a middle aged, monogamous, married woman and a pastor, but I also say it as someone deeply committed to feminism. I am happy to shed the silence and shaming around sex that was a part of my young adulthood, but we have to say something better to our daughters than what this movie says. This image released by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. shows Alison Brie, left, and Anders Holm in a scene from, “How to Be Single.” (Jojo Whilden/Warner Bros. Entertainment via AP) Inc. There are, as I’ve already suggested, a lot of drunken sexual encounters with strangers in How to Be Single , along with a couple of sober encounters with other strangers or “friends with benefits”. The story revolves around four single women in New York. Alice (Dakota Johnson) is “taking a break” from her college boyfriend in a quest for personal growth. Her older sister, Meg (Mann), is an obstetrician who longs for a baby of her own but has no man in her life. In her new job at a law firm, Alice meets Robin (Rebel Wilson), a party girl who exults in her quest to conquer New York City one penis at a time. (That last sentence is a quick test. If you’re offended by it, trust me, you shouldn’t see How to Be Single .) Finally, there’s Lucy (Alison Brie) who is obsessed with finding a husband. I mean, really, really obsessed. And then there are a bunch of men. There’s Tom (Anders Holm), a cartoonishly promiscuous bar owner who sleeps with half the female characters but loses his heart to yet another one. There’s Josh (Nicolas Braun), Alice’s college boyfriend, who gets yanked around by her indecisiveness and still winds up looking like the bad guy. There’s Ken (Jake Lacy), a sweet young lunkhead who falls for Meg after a hookup. And then there’s David…and George…and Paul…and the guys that Robin sleeps with who don’t merit names. I am less amused than saddened by Robin being held up as the mentor for Alice’s sexual awakening. Robin admits to using drugs and drinks so heavily that more than one scene shows her waking up unsure of where she is and unable to remember whether she had sex the night before. Spoiler: she’s always had sex the night before. Robin is an ugly exaggeration of the character Rebel Wilson has played in the Pitch Perfect movies, and I sincerely hope Wilson has a long talk with her agent about her career before she is painted into this grotesque corner for good. One scene shows Robin rebuking a young man for fixing her breakfast after she’s slept over at his apartment.

Edit: I never expected this big of a response. Thanks for sharing. I got responses from trying to shame me for asking what men want, to assuming I'm shopping for a husband on Reddit. There were a couple of propositions and an unwanted DM. All of these responses were amusing. Then there were some informative considerate responses which I truly appreciate. Thanks for these.

A Single Man is a 2009 American drama film based on the 1964 novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. The directorial debut of fashion designer Tom Ford, the film stars Colin Firth, who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of George Falconer, a depressed gay British university professor living in Southern California in 1962. The film premiered on September 11, 2009, at the 66th Venice International Film Festival, and went on the film festival circuit.

After it screened at the 34th Toronto International Film Festival, The Weinstein Company picked it up for distribution in the United States and Germany. An initial limited run in the United States commenced on December 11, 2009, to qualify it for the 82nd Academy Awards with a wider release in early 2010. On November 30, 1962, a month after the Cuban Missile Crisis, George Falconer is a middle-aged English college professor living in Los Angeles. George dreams that he encounters the body of his longtime partner, Jim, at the scene of the car accident that took Jim',s life eight months earlier. He bends down to kiss his dead lover. After awakening, George delivers a voiceover discussing the pain and depression he has endured since Jim',s death and his intention to commit suicide that evening. George receives a phone call from his dearest friend, Charley, who projects lightheartedness despite her also being miserable. George goes about his day putting his affairs in order and focusing on the beauty of isolated events, believing he is seeing things for the last time. At times, he recalls his sixteen-year-long relationship with Jim. During the school day, George comes into contact with a student, Kenny Potter, who shows interest in George and disregards conventional boundaries of student–professor discussion. George also forms an unexpected connection with a Spanish male prostitute, Carlos. That evening, George meets Charley for dinner. Though they initially reminisce and amuse themselves by dancing, Charley',s desire for a deeper relationship with George and her failure to understand his relationship with Jim anger George. George goes to a bar and discovers that Kenny has followed him. They get a round of drinks, go skinny dipping, and then return to George',s house and continue drinking. George passes out and wakes up in bed with Kenny asleep in another room. Cast Colin Firth as George Falconer Julianne Moore as Charlotte ",Charley", Roberts Nicholas Hoult as Kenny Potter Matthew Goode as Jim Jon Kortajarena as Carlos Paulette Lamori as Alva Ryan Simpkins as Jennifer Strunk Jon Hamm has an uncredited voice cameo as Jim',s cousin Harold Ackerly, who calls George to tell him of Jim',s death and that the funeral is ",just for family.", Production Fashion designer Tom Ford, as a first-time director, financed the film himself. The film places emphasis on the culture of the 1960s, the production design is by the same team that designed AMC television',s Mad Men, which is set in the same era. Mad Men star Jon Hamm has an uncredited voice cameo as the cousin of George',s partner, Jim. The actual house where the character George lives in the film was designed in 1948 by John Lautner, his first house after leaving Frank Lloyd Wright. The film was shot in 21 days, according to ",The Making of A Single Man",, a featurette included on the DVD release of the film. An early theatrical poster for A Single Man featured a close-up shot of Colin Firth and Julianne Moore lying side by side, their arms and shoulders touching. This led to speculation that the work',s gay content and themes were being deleted or diminished in its marketing materials to improve its chances of success with a wider audience. A new poster with Moore relocated to the background was issued. The film',s original trailer placed more emphasis on the relationship between George and Jim but a re-cut trailer omitted a shot of George and Jim kissing while retaining a kiss between George and Charley. Speaking of the controversy, Moore said that director Tom Ford expressed concern that the original poster made the film appear to be a romantic comedy and that he ordered that the poster be changed. However Ford said, ",I don',t think the movie',s been de-gayed. The film was nominated for the Golden Lion at the 66th Venice International Film Festival and on the festival',s third annual Queer Lion,Colin Firth was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the film festival for his performance in the film. He also received the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.Additionally, Firth received nominations at the Golden Globe Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Academy Awards. For her performance, Julianne Moore was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture. It also won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film – Wide Release and was named the AFI',s Film of the Year. I was EXTREMELY skeptical when I first downloaded this app. I created my profile and started looking through my feed of people that were being recommended to me. I thought “this has to be riddled with scammers and catfish”. After a few swipes I got a notice that I needed to complete a facial scan so the Bumpy team could verify that I was the person in the photos that I uploaded. I completed the scan and realized that if everyone is required to complete the verification, they have essentially prevented the ability for people to come on and use other peoples photos to scam you. It’s absolutely ingenious. The app does have a subscription but it’s not totally necessary to yield high results. I do not have the subscription, however after spending a few days on the app I am genuinely interested in getting it. There is a very cool map feature so you can search by country for other people. If you are on the fence, give it a try! I love Bumpy! I have even convinced a few of my friends to download it and they really like it! Developer Response , Hi, Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We're glad you find our features helpful, especially the map feature for country-specific searches. We appreciate your support and hope you and your friends continue enjoying Bumpy! After seeing that, I had 238 likes, I paid 13 to see them. There were 200 from other countries 38 from the US. Of those 38, only 15 were photo verified. The rest where scammers. Of the 200, almost all of them were from Africa in the Middle East. Photos were not verified. To test it out, I engaged in conversation with 20 of them. All 20 eventually try to get money out of me. And presumably a green card. If this is your thing ladies, have at. But there are literally no safeguards in place.. These men prey on women, hoping to get money out of them. It is full of scammers and liars. I did not find one match out of all 238. I legitimately hate this app and I want my money back. More importantly, there needs to be safeguards. You can choose if you want your search to be worldwide, but you cannot choose to only receive matches from the United States. So even if your filter is set to the US, you still have to wade through men from other countries who chose your profile. They are also isn’t a way to mass delete. I had to go through every single one individually and hit the X. I will be contacting customer service in the morning to see if I can get my money back. Like for real and getting rid of the app do yourself a favor and do not download unless you want to be scammed by foreign men. Developer Response , Hi! We’re really sorry to hear about your negative experience. We take scammers and suspicious activity seriously and encourage users to report such profiles so we can take action. As for the country filters, we appreciate your feedback and are working on improving these options in the app. Please reach out to our support team at support@bumpy.app, and we will look into your concerns and assist you further. Your safety and satisfaction are very important to us. Thank you for sharing your experience. Missing Key Features. I actually really enjoy this app. I have always been someone who dates outside their race and having traveled to multiple countries, I am certainly open to dating internationally. This is one of the few apps that creates an open space for likeminded people to meet. As wonderful as this is, Bumpy could use some small changes that will make BIG differences in how often I recommend the app to others. First of all, there are no preference filters outside of age. As someone who takes their faith seriously, I deeply prefer an app that lets me filter out non-religious people so we don’t waste anyone’s time. It also helps to filter out folks with/without children—whatever suits you—but that filter isn’t there…. All you can do is set your age and if you’re interested in men or women. That’s it. For an app that connects people across the WORLD, you would think it would have the most filters possible because there are so many different cultures, languages, religions, etc. but nope. Other than that, I would love to give this a higher rating and refer all my friends but in this state, Bumpy almost feels like an app that isn’t finished yet. Hopefully it will get better in the future but I don’t plan to be there long, haha! Developer Response , Hi Vally! hank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback and for your kind words about Bumpy. We’re thrilled to hear that you enjoy the app and appreciate its openness for international connections. Your suggestions about preference filters, including faith and family status, are really valuable, and we understand how important these options can be for making meaningful connections. Our team is always working on improving the app, and we’ll certainly consider adding more filters to better meet the diverse needs of our global community. Feedback like yours helps us grow and improve, so we truly appreciate it. App Privacy. Waterfalls, deserts, mountains, oceans, rivers and lakes, forests and even canyons - the list can be continued a lot. Hello, visitor!
Article:
Marriage just a click away for China's desperate single men. Marriage to a Vietnamese bride is just a click -- and a few thousand dollars -- away on a blizzard of Chinese websites promising to solve the single problems" of China's men. A decades-long one-child policy has created a yawning demographic disparity in China, with tens of millions more men than women.

Sites like Zhongyuelove.com make their margin plugging that gap, linking lovelorn Chinese men with Vietnamese women, pressed by poverty at home to marry thousands of miles away. "Vietnamese women are a blessing for this group (unmarried Chinese men)," the website says, using an image gallery of women in their early 20s backed up by poetic words on the prospective brides to seize the interest of China's bachelors. "They (the women) are pure, beautiful, traditional," it says "and possess the gentleness and virtue of Chinese women but also the romantic exoticism of a foreign bride." Its matchmaking fee for connecting bachelors is around $4,000 -- which includes non-refundable 'blind dates', an unspecified 'pre-marital medical exam' and wedding photography if all goes well. The fee does not cover wedding gifts to the bride's family or transportation fees for the bride and groom. For those concerned by the possibility of failed marriages and the shady brokering system that attracts conmen on both sides of the border, Zhongyuelove has an 'FAQ' section. It offers reassurance on the visa process for a foreign bride and warns would-be grooms to be up front about their income, living situation and any disabilities. The 'sensitive questions' tab delves deeper with blunt queries about the beauty and ethics of Vietnamese women as well as discussions over the likelihood of them running away after the marriage -- and the fees have been paid. Matchmaking is common inside China, but the overseas bride business has exploded in recent years with men fearing a lifetime of singledom while 'bride prices' -- doweries -- for Chinese women rise sharply. There are no official figures but experts believe tens of thousands of women from Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia pour into China each year for marriage. Many go willingly, connected via websites as well as informal and illegal networks of brokers on both sides of the border. Others are tricked to move for work, kidnapped and forced into marriage. Websites like http://www.0084520.com offer and ranks the would-be brides for 'popularity' while running a photo ticker of happy marriage ceremonies, complete with Vietnamese conical hats and Ao Dai tunics, bouquets of flowers, smiles and alcohol. Several other sites, all with QR code logins and endless photos of women to scroll through, tantalise with the promise of love for China's forgotten men. "If you always get the cold shoulder or are rejected, then we welcome you to come to Vietnam. and enjoy a different matchmaking experience," reads the blurb on one. By: Richmond News.
