[Drama of The Week] Dating Agency Cyrano. A dating agency in a threatre not too bad a concept for an office, aye? I thought so. However, I am not sure if I would like Seo Byung as my boss though. In fact, the two male leads appeared to be so out of place with the entire concept and cast crews. Each and every “employee” of this agency has a unique feature about them but Seo Byung? If you considered cold and being mean on purpose a concept. It doesn’t help that he’s much older and the “age gap” is too jarring here. Seo Byung is one stoic man with limited expression, very constricted it is as if he’s at war with himself. The desire to be free and expressive versus the cool and mean personas that he wants to portray and to be taken for. Of course, we all saw why, why he was wearing the mask of stoic-ness. But, still, he seems to be wearing the same masks in all the dramas he has acted in. Is this the real Seo Byung, on and off screens? Dating Agency Cyrano is about a match making agency which employed theatrical skills and stunts to woo potential partners and to pique the attention of the potential suitors. IT is almost hilarious seeing how the team went out of their way to ensure that the right setting was made, the right thing was said and the right person was stationed. Gong Stone, the moniker affectionately given to her by Seo Byung complements the stoic-ness of Seo Byung’s character. Gong Stone a go-getter and outrightly fearless and a hopeless romantic, believes in fairy tales more than anything in the world of romance. She has no qualms bringing her feelings forward and present it raw, as it is without sugarcoating it or beat around the bushes to get her points across. In this regard, she earned my respect and fandom. Dating Agency Cyrano feels more like a mini series than a drama in my opinion. This 16-episode drama is divided into 8 or more plots or stories. Each plot seeing this team put together their expertise in wooing their target and client and bring people together in the name of love. The transition between plot is nicely done, very smooth, each new beginning feels like a fresh new story instead of a remnant of the previous plot or story. This is matchmaking agency is a top notch matchmaking agency, I wonder if there’s one like that in the whole wide world. Hmmmm….perhaps this is the Korean-style matchmaking agency. Seo Byung a man that is often misunderstood, a person who held everything in without opening up and showing people around him the real him. 10 years on Seo Byung is still very much in love with her first love, Yi Seol, but it is through Gong Stone that he realised that what he thought was love was not actually love but obligation. He has never given his feeling of Yi Seol a good consideration, only vaguely convinced himself that it is love. In fact it is not. And, learning it from the most unlikely person. Seo Byung was a arrogant man, always above himself, but when it comes to the matter of the heart, our hero here is a timid little wounded kitty. He loves Gong Stone but pushed her to Master because he believed that he can never be a good man to her. But, he hasn’t even try. It takes a lot of topsy turvy and twist of events for him to confront his feelings and eventually acknowledged that he can not live a part from her. A dread yes, however, without these dramas, we will not see how these characters grow together. I was never a fan of Master, not only his character, but not really a fan of Lee Chun Hee. I find his acting lacks soul, very stiff. The only thing that caught my attention was his height, I can’t take my eyes off his longggggg legs. It’s never ending. It can go on for miles on end. Lee Chun Hee in this drama plays Master, the brother of Seo Byung’s good friend whom was adopted by a relative. Throughout their friendship, Seo Byung had never met Master though he vaguely remember Go Do Il mentioned about him. Master on the other hand knew every single detail about Seo Byung and he is in a plot to seek revenge against Seo Byung for he believed Seo Byung was responsible for his bother’s death and therefore he should pay for Do Il’s death. Master was also a retired gangster with two sidekicks still faithfully follow him. These sidekicks add hilarity into the mundane everyday life of reformed gangster. Both men fell in love with Gong Stone, the sunshine girl. It’s sad that the second lead always treat their girls better but they never get the girls. In almost every drama so far, no girls fall for their second lead. In this drama, there is no exception. Master is very forward with his feelings for Gong Stone, making efforts in letting her know how he feels about her and dropping extra hints here and there. On the other hand, Seo Byung is remote with his feelings, holding his feelings to himself. He cares but he is vehement in denying that it has anything to do with his feelings for her, always throwing the you-are-my-staff-therefore-care excuse. If not for Master and the rest of the crew, I suspect this drama will end without him confessing to Gong Stone, who’s the stone here now? And, Mr Seo, what’s with the Sherlock-esque trenchcoat?
