Many players compare slots and assume that similar payout percentages mean a similar experience. But once you understand what RTP is in slots, you’ll realize that return rate alone doesn’t explain how a game actually feels during play.

RTP, or Return to Player, shows the long-term percentage a slot is designed to pay back. For example, two games might both have 96% RTP. On paper, they look almost identical. In reality, they can play very differently.

The key difference is volatility. Volatility determines how often and how much a slot pays:

• Low volatility – smaller wins, more frequently• High volatility – bigger wins, less often• Medium volatility – a balance between the two

The RTP of a slot machine is a theoretical estimate of how much you'll win, but this is an average over thousands or millions of spins.

The short term will always be affected by short-term luck; eg. in high variance games, it might feel like it has been "bad", even though long-term averages say otherwise.

In general, a high-volatility slot might go a long time without paying anything, then pay out massively (high/high).

In contrast, low-volatility slots will produce consistently smaller wins (low/low).

To make the best decisions for you, it's important to take other factors into consideration (e.g. how often the bonuses come, type of features used, amount of the jackpots, and hit rate). These other factors can add significantly to the overall emotions associated with playing a particular game.

So while the RTP may be the same for two different slot games (e.g. both could have 96% RTP), they will have very different experiences emotionally for you. Therefore, it is important to understand both RTP and volatility in slot games so that you will be able to find a game that fits within your comfort zone and fits within your playing style.
